St. Mary Medical Center recognized as among Top 100 in Nation for Orthopedic Surgery

Study of Patient Outcomes from Approximately 4,500 Hospitals Nationwide finds St. Mary Medical Center among 100 Best HOBART –St. Mary Medical Center is among America’s 100 Best hospitals in for Orthopedic Surgery as measured by lowest risk-adjusted complications, according to the latest report from Healthgrades, the leading online resource that helps consumers search, compare and connect with physicians and hospitals. The report, American Hospital Quality Outcomes 2014: Healthgrades Report to the Nation, evaluates hospital performance at over 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 31 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions from 2010 through 2012.

The new report highlights the disparity in hospital performance for specific conditions and procedures and the impact that this variation may have on health outcomes. For example, from 2010-2012, if all hospitals as a group, performed similarly to hospitals receiving 5-stars as a group, on average 234,252 lives could potentially have been saved and 157,418 complications could potentially have been avoided. A 5-star rating indicates that St. Mary Medical Center’s clinical outcomes are better than expected when treating the condition or conducting the procedure being evaluated.

St. Mary medical Center not only performs at a 5 star level – it outperforms other hospitals in the nation in this condition, and as a result has been recognized with the 2014 Healthgrades 100 Best Hospitals for Orthopedic Surgery.

“Our orthopedic surgery program, which includes our Joint Academy, is one of the most highly recognized in the entire Chicagoland area. To be acknowledged by Healthgrades among America’s 100 Best for orthopedic surgeries confirms our hospital’s commitment toward creating a culture of excellence,” said Janice Ryba, Chief Executive Officer, St. Mary Medical Center. “We are proud of our teams who maintain that high level of performance in all our services and continually provide the highest quality, compassionate care to all of our patients.”

“Hospitals earn these distinctions by providing better than expected outcomes for specific conditions and procedures,” said Evan Marks, EVP, Strategy and Informatics, Healthgrades. “When selecting physicians associated with a hospital that has achieved recognitions such as the clinical areas that the hospitals of Community Healthcare System have achieved, consumers can expect to find a commitment to exceptional clinical quality care,” he said.

For analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 40 million Medicare patient records from nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide, assessing hospital performance relative to each of 31 common conditions and procedures. Healthgrades awards hospitals quality achievements for group-specific performance, specialty area performance and overall clinical quality. Individual procedures or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically better than expected), 3-star (statistically as expected) and 1-star (worse than expected) categories.
